The trace reconstruction problem is a fundamental sequence reconstruction problem, which is made particularly challenging by deletions and insertions. Despite lots of work in the past decade, the problem remains wide open. In this talk I will give an overview of this problem: the challenges, the state of the art, variants, and applications to DNA data storage.
